Information and training platform for methods to replace and supplement animal experiments
3R SMART is an information and training platform for methods to replace and supplement animal experiments, which is aimed at both interested lay people and also scientists and technical personnel. The acronym 3Rs SMART stands for 3Rs training platform for methodological approaches to reduce animal experiments. The 3Rs themselves stand for:
Refinement:
Measures that mean avoidance or reduction of stresses for laboratory animals.
Reduction:
Reduction in the number animals needed through improved techniques and optimization of study plans.
Replacement:
Replacement of vertebrates or cephalopods, for example, with cell cultures, computer models, bacteria, fruit flies or grasshopper embryos.
The 3R SMART platform addresses possible alternatives to animal experiments in particular. The alternative methods are itemized here according to their fields of application. First of all, the methods are presented in video clips, which provide either a brief overview or detailed information for those interested. The alternatives presented include both validated methods and also novel approaches. In addition, various 3R centres from Germany and Europe are presented.
The project is being financed by the BMBFand coordinated and built up by the Foundation University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover and the Philipps University of Marburg.
